How to Talk About Hospice Care
Having a conversation about Hospice care with a dying family member is never easy. However, having this conversation before the final stages of life can ensure your loved one receives the kind of care they deserve. Unfortunately, many patients don’t have the “Hospice” discussion until the late in their disease and don’t receive all the benefits of Hospice care.
- Choose a time and place to have this discussion that is free of interruptions.
- Remember you can bring up the topic and revisit it later if the timing isn’t right. Try to be sensitive to your loved one. Each individual copes with their illness differently.
- Let them know Hospice care is an option not a commitment. You and your family can change your minds about using Hospice care at any time.
- Listen.
- Try to be as open minded as possible and remember this discussion is difficult for everyone.
- Remember Hospice does not mean “giving up”; it means taking control of the last part of your life and deciding how to live during that time.
- Lastly, if you need help or assistance in discussing Hospice care consult professionals. Hospice of Northern Colorado staff is trained to have these difficult discussions. We are available to provide information to you and your family where you are most comfortable. Contact us at (970) 352-8487.
